In healthy cats, the liver filters dangerous toxins like ammonia from the bloodstream before they can damage the brain and other organs. Danny was born with an abnormal blood vessel inside the liver itself that diverts blood away from the organ's normal filtration pathways, allowing those toxins to build up unchecked in his system.
What makes Danny's condition especially severe is its location. Unlike an extrahepatic shunt, where the abnormal vessel sits outside the liver and can sometimes be corrected with a relatively straightforward surgical procedure, an intrahepatic shunt is embedded deep within the liver tissue — making surgical intervention far more complex, invasive, and risky.
Many cats born with this condition don't survive beyond kittenhood. Symptoms can include stunted growth, disorientation, seizures, and failure to thrive. Unlike extrahepatic shunts, which can sometimes be corrected by placing an ameroid constrictor around the vessel, intrahepatic shunts may require interventional radiology procedures like coil embolization: threading a catheter through the blood vessels to place tiny coils inside the shunt and block it. These procedures can only be performed at specialty veterinary hospitals and carry significant risk and cost.
